Saudi Aramco’s storied history has set the company up for an exciting future, President and CEO Amin Nasser told attendees of the 2018 President’s Excellence Awards ceremony.

The event was held to recognize 20 organizations for top performances in the “critical” areas of Maintenance and Reliability, Safety, Environmental Stewardship, Operational Excellence, and Joint Ventures.

A value treasured for decades

Before distributing the awards, Nasser noted that excellence has always been “a core value” for the company’s long-termplans for growth and value creation, going back eight decades to the contributions of Max Steineke and Khamis Ibn Rimthan, who were instrumental in bringing about the Kingdom’s first commercial oil discovery.

“Those early values instilled by our pioneers have firmly stood the test of time, and generations of Aramcons have proudly carried on the legacy of excellence,” said Nasser. “Our history has prepared us well for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Nasser said the organizations recognized this year are representative of the commitment that is needed to meet our goal of becoming the world’s leading integrated energy and chemicals company.

“As we continue to evolve, our company will look different in the future than it does today, but what is clear to me is that we have the people to make this happen,” he said.

“As such achievements do not happen in isolation, let me also extend my appreciation to all of the employees, teams, and contractors who played an important role in the success being honored today.”

The awards recognize overall performance in the respective categories through clearly-defined, and measurable, criteria— for both operating facilities, and service organizations to reflect the company’s vast diversity of operations.

S-Oil earned three awards in the Joint Venture category, while ‘Uthmaniyah Gas Plant, Northern Area Industrial Security Operations, and Yanbu’ NGL Fractionation were awarded two apiece in other categories. Both Abqaiq Plants and the Abqaiq Plants Maintenance Department picked up awards.

Kingdom’s ‘precious natural resources’ in focus for Drilling and Workover Services

Drilling and Workover Services was recognized for its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted drilling operations, while maintaining a focus on safety and environmental stewardship.

A recycling initiative showcased at Monday’s ceremony showed drilling mud and super sacks that were previously disposed of but are now repaired, reconditioned, and reused. The initiative provided environmental benefits such as reduced hazardous chemical waste, decreased pollution, less landfill usage, preservation of water resources, and significant cost avoidance.

“This award is a recognition of the dedication of our employees and consistent support at all levels of management to find creative solutions to improve operational efficiency, while also being responsible stewards of the Kingdom’s precious natural resources,” said manager Nayef K. Al-Ghafel. “We continue to seek ways to ensure these resources are both protected and used responsibly as the engine of future economic growth.”

Environmental stewardship‘journey’ continues at Haradh Gas Plant

The Haradh Gas Plant Department (HdGPD) was also recognized for adopting a strategical approach to minimizing its environmental footprint.

With regard to water conservation, HdGPD saves more than 7.5 million gallons of water annually by redirecting reverse osmosis first and second pass into product tanks. Moreover, the department adopted a best in class Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) contamination program that includes promoting general awareness, handling, manifestation, and storage. The program is led by internationally certified employees to ensure the implementation of the highest HSE standards.

HdGPD manager Tariq A. Al-Turairi noted the department completed these initiatives in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Department.

“Our journey shall continue to foster stewardship of our environment and the community as a demonstration of our citizenship value,” said Al-Turairi.

Safety a ‘top priority’ for Manifa Producing

The Manifa Producing Department (MPD) was rewarded for establishing a number of safety initiatives that led to an impressive zero incidents in 2017 on all safety key performance indicators.

Additionally, MPD reduced traffic violations in 2016 by 71% compared to 2015, with a further 72% decrease in 2017. The improvement was achieved by controlling traffic during adverse weather conditions, mobile SMS messages, awareness emails, and encouraging the use of mass transportation.

MPD achieved zero contractor incidents in 2017 after establishing safety awareness programs such as developing a contractor safety handbook and conducting workshops. A continuing drop in work permit findings reached 3.5% in 2017. Other initiatives included the Manifa Safety Ambassadors Program and the Emergency Response Plan eLearning course.

“We are always taking safety as our top priority, and we always encourage our people to come up with new ways and means to have the best safety culture and sustain it long term,” said acting manager Naif A. Al-Sulami.

Pillars a key for Abqaiq Plants Maintenance

A focus on three pillars — assets, workforce, and the processes that facilitate interaction between them — helped the Abqaiq Plants Maintenance earn a Maintenance and Reliability award.

In regard to assets, the department is continuously seeking new means to sustain the reliability of machines and equipment for smooth operation.

For processes, the department closely monitors the types of activities, systems, and logistics that can be utilized by the workforce when interacting with assets. Examples that have enhanced performance include a Maintenance and Reliability Advisory Board for the area and the department’s turnaround and inspection optimization.

With the majority of the department’s workforce under 25, establishing an intensive knowledge transfer program has been instrumental in bridging knowledge gaps and increasing employee competency.

“This award is a tremendous encouragement to always achieve excellence in maintaining safety and reliability,” said manager Salah A. Al Juraidan. “We will continue exploring various opportunities to sustain and further improve such high performance to enhance the reliability of the assets by capitalizing on our talented workforce.”
