Aramco Asia scholarship promotes mathematic and system sciences

Aamco Asia, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Education Foundation and the CAS Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences (AMSS) jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 15 to launch a scholarship program for outstanding graduate students. The program is within the framework of corporate social responsibility of Saudi Aramco and Aramco Asia.

The beginning of closer cooperation

The MoU serves as a platform for conducting joint research in upstream mathematical modeling, energy, and economic research in China. It also represents a milestone in the partnership between Aramco Asia and CAS, and marks the beginning of close cooperation in the fields of education, research, and corporate social responsibility.

The scholarship, sponsored by Saudi Aramco, demonstrates the company’s appreciation for CAS’ efforts in cultivating academic leaders and talents in the fields of mathematics and system sciences.

With the support of Aramco Asia, starting from academic year 2016, the scholarship will be awarded to graduate students with outstanding academic results and excellent research. It includes eight special awards and 14 excellent awards annually through the five-year cooperation agreement.

“Aramco Asia is committed to building up a knowledge society that will benefit the local community where we have a presence. The MoU signed today is a good example of our commitment,” said Nabil Al-Nuaim, president and CEO of Aramco Asia, during the signing ceremony.

“Through working extensively with the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences, we will be able to seek more opportunities for research, innovation, and partnership. I think there is a lot that we can do together, such as understanding the economic structure of the Chinese economy and its transformation into the “new normal” put forward by the Chinese government. All of this will help Saudi Aramco align its global ambition in crucial economies such as China,”
Al-Nuaim added.

CAS AMSS vice president Wang Shouyang extended his gratitude to the Aramco guests. He welcomed the cooperation with Aramco Asia and hoped to explore further mutually beneficial partnerships between the academic institute and commercial establishment. “The signing of the MoU and launch of the scholarship program strengthens the academic collaboration, and we look forward to working with Aramco Asia on this exciting project,” Wang said.

Working with the Aramco Asia-Beijing Research Center

“CAS is one of the key partners in academia with which the Aramco Asia-Beijing Research Center (BRC) is collaborating and where the center has already made significant achievements in its research toward advanced seismic imaging,” BRC director Khalid Rufaii said. “The MoU will fortify BRC endeavors in creating cutting-edge solutions to existing exploration and production challenges through innovative thinking and state-of-the-art technology,” he added.

Founded in 1998, CAS AMSS is a national comprehensive academic research center for mathematics and systems sciences. The strategic objectives of AMSS are to make important, original, and pivotal research results, and to bring forward academic talents and leaders in the field of mathematics and systems sciences that include analytical mathematics and mathematical physics, number theory, algebra, geometry and topology, computing mathematics, financial mathematics, and knowledge science.
