Aramco hosts forum to discuss emerging technologies in the energy sector

Aramco Senior Vice President of Engineering Services Khalid Al Qahtani (R6), Aramco China Managing Director Nader Al Arfaj (R7), Aramco Asia Vice President of Engineering and Technical Services Mohammed Mulhim (L6) and Aramco Asia Procurement & Supply Chain Management Director and Shanghai Branch Manager Mohammed Al Humaidi (R4) joined attendees at the “Unleashing Future Opportunities & Growth” (UFOG) forum in Shanghai on May 26, 2025.

Aramco hosted the Unleashing Future Opportunities & Growth (UFOG) forum in Shanghai on May 26, in a push to foster innovation and collaboration in the energy sector. 

Representatives from more than 40 companies took part in the one-day forum. The diverse gathering of industry players ensured a comprehensive and multi-faceted exploration of the latest trends and technologies. 

Focusing on “Emerging Technologies in the Energy Sector,” the event was the first forum of this kind hosted by Aramco in China. It aimed to address challenges, improve operational efficiency, and enhance collaboration between Aramco and Chinese partners.
 
In his opening remarks, Khalid Y. Al Qahtani, Aramco Senior Vice President of Engineering Services, said: “Hosting this dialogue in China, a nation at the forefront of technological innovation, underscores the significance of collaboration in driving sustainable progress. We are witnessing how AI, robotics, smart systems, and advanced materials are reshaping operational ecosystems. This forum represents an important step in accelerating the adoption of such technologies in the energy sector.”

Through insightful discussions and diverse perspectives provided by global participants, the forum explored innovation across four key themes: smart manufacturing plants leveraging digital sensors and AI to enhance efficiency; reliability and integrity focused on advanced monitoring and maintenance solutions; UAV and robotics applications; and the use of advanced materials such as composites and carbon to improve durability in energy and construction projects.

George Cui, Chairman of SUPCON, a Chinese technology partner of Aramco, said: “We were particularly impressed by the forum's focus on practical technological applications and its remarkable achievement in facilitating in-depth exchanges between Chinese and Saudi enterprises. This platform significantly advances energy sector digitization while fostering global technological cooperation. We remain committed to collaborating with Aramco to pioneer next-generation intelligent solutions that enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability."  

A session also took place that focused on industrial investment opportunities within the Saudi market under the “Invest Saudi” theme. Ten Aramco-sponsored students who completed their engineering undergraduate studies in Shanghai also took part.

The event concluded with a number of technical sessions run by experts from Aramco Engineering Services. They presented current technological landscapes and discussed various approaches to tackling challenging problems.

In the technical sessions, Aramco Subject Matter Expert (SME) sat with participants to go through the latest technical advancement.
